IBM Content Navigator: MIME Type Determination

Troubleshooting

Problem

MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension) types of documents added to IBM Content Navigator (ICN) are determined by the type of file on the user's workstation. The file extension on the workstation is mapped to a MIME type in the Microsoft Windows Registry

Symptom

Cause

  • The MIME type of documents added and checked in to ICN is taken from the type of the file on the user's machine
  • On Microsoft Windows clients, the relationships between file extensions and MIME types is stored in the client machine's system registry

Diagnosing The Problem

Check the Microsoft Windows registry for the MIME type mapping:

  1. Backup the Microsoft Windows registry before continuing
  2. Click the Start icon and enter "regedit" in the 'Search programs and files" field
  3. Browse to the file extension in HKEY_CLASS_ROOT
  4. If the extension does not exist, it is assigned the default mime type "application/octet-stream"
  5. For example, a document with an extension of .contact is normally mapped to MIME type text/x-ms-contact because the registry shows the entry: HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\.contact : Content Type = text/x-ms-contact

Resolving The Problem

Open the registry for editing as noted above, determine the MIME type mapping, and use this value when mapping MIME types to the ICN viewer applets:

  1. From the ICN Admin desktop, create/edit a custom viewer map
  2. Enter the repository type "FileNet Content Manager"
  3. From the drop-down list, select the desired Viewer
  4. If the desired mime type does not exist, enter the value in the New MIME type field. For example: "text/x-ms-contact"
  5. Click the OK button
Note: the change is picked up only for documents added after this change was made and only if they are added through a new session of ICN - i.e documents added prior to making this registry entry will continue to have application/octet-stream as the mime type.
