IBM Cloud Pak For Data: Handling Embedded Postgres License Expiry and Upgrades in Cloud Pak for Data v4.7.x and v4.8.x

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technical note addresses the impact of the Embedded Postgres license key expiry on Cloud Pak for Data (CP4D) environments and provides guidance on remediation steps. The current Embedded Postgres license key is set to expire in October 2024. Post expiry, the Embedded Postgres operator will not monitor the Embedded Postgres operand Pods, potentially leading to Embedded Postgres downtime during Pod evictions or worker node reboots, which in turn, can cause Cloud Pak downtime.

  • Impacted Versions:  Cloud Pak for Data (CPD) v4.7.x and v4.8.x.

  • License Expiry Date: October 1, 2024, at 00:00:00 (midnight) in UTC time

  • Post-Expiry Behavior: The Embedded Postgres operator will not ensure the running state of Embedded Postgres operand Pods.

  • Potential Issues: Any Embedded Postgres database Pod eviction or worker node reboot will lead to Embedded Postgres downtime.

  • Resulting Downtime: Embedded Postgres downtime will cause Cloud Pak downtime.
