IBM AIX: NFS mount failure on Linux client with an AIX NFS server

Troubleshooting

Problem

Shares on an AIX® NFS server cannot be mounted onto a Linux NFS client.

Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the United States, other countries, or both.

Symptom

The mount command fails on Linux with the error mount.nfs: Remote I/O error.

Cause

By default, certain distributions and versions of Linux try to mount NFS shares with NFSv4. Unless AIX is configured to support NFSv4, the mount request fails with the error mount.nfs: Remote I/O error.

Resolving The Problem

There are two ways to resolve the problem.

Add the option -o nfsvers=3 to the mount command on Linux.
Configure AIX to support NFSv4.
