Symptom
When adding a network adapter via "Network" in Control Panel or during a new installation of Microsoft Windows NT, the network adapter is not shown. After choosing "Select From List," then "Have Disk," the following or similar error occurs when trying to copy files from the driver diskette:
An error has occurred:
Unable to open the file x:\i386\OEM_FILE_NAME
Affected configurations
The error may occur under both Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server v.4.0.
The error may be seen on an IBM system when installing any IBM Token-Ring or Ethernet adapter that requires a "Have Disk" function on installation.
Solution
Microsoft is aware of this issue and has released Knowledge Base article Q156606 to address it. It can be found at the following URL: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q156/6/06.asp
Copy the files to be installed into the x:\i386\ subdirectory, where x: is the drive on which Windows NT is installed.
