I cannot use string variables for creating a multiple response set within Analyze - Multiple Response - Define Variable Sets

Troubleshooting

Problem

I have a data file which contains string variables only. The string variables represent answers to multiple response questions and are either dichotomous or categorical answers coded as strings. However, when I click on Analyze - Multiple Response - Define Variable Sets I get a popup window with a warning: "All variables in the working file or in variable sets in use are inappropriate for this dialog box", why is this?

Resolving The Problem

This is functioning as designed. Within the menu Analyze - Multiple response - Define Variable Sets it is not possible to use string variables for MULT RESPONSE sets. To circumvent the issue you can either autorecode your string variables into numeric variables and use them with MULT RESPONSE. If you have the Custom Tables option you can create MR SETS with your string variables wthout recoding them into numeric
