Problem
The HTTP_REFERER header field is missing from certain sessions.

Solution
There are multiple reasons that can explain why the HTTP_REFERER header field is not populated.

This field may be empty when the customer:
  • Opened the site as first page in the window or tab.
  • Typed the URL in the browser address bar itself.
  • Opened the site from a browser bookmark.
  • Moved from a HTTP page to a HTTPS one.
  • Moved from a HTTPS page to a HTTP one.
  • Browsed the site programmatically without setting the referrer header.
  • Is behind a proxy/firewall which strips the referrer from all requests.
Some browser addons and antivirus software can also block this header for privacy reasons.
