Question
How to use Tau G2 tool in a multi-user environment
Answer
There are two ways of using G2 in a multi-user environment:
1. Using Configuration Management(CM) tool
Here, many users will be working on a single project and changing the same u2 file of the project.
In the CM environment, there will a common ancestor to those files.
Using three-way diff/merge capabilities of Tau G2, it is possible to merge the changes back to the model.
To perform the merge operation in G2, click on Tools -> Merge.
This will open up a window. Provide the files to be merged.
2. Without any CM tools
In this case, each user would work in his/her own directory on copies of the project. At certain points, a central co-ordinator could take those changed files and using the diff/merge capabilities merge the
changed files. Due to different directories, it could be a bit complicated to coordinate.
E.g.: We have a project used by User1 and User2. Both the users would make changes to the same part in the tool. Later the changes are collected at one location and the Tau G2 tool is opened to merge the two files using diff/merge. The common ancestor will be the original copy of the file (before changes are made) and the two files obtained after making changes are merged.
At this point, the files are copied to another baseline location and the process continues.
The manual process is complicated and using the CM environment would make the process easier.
