How to use a dual monitor configuration to run Rational Statemate

Question & Answer

Question

How you can run IBM Rational Statemate on a system with a second monitor attached (often called a dual monitor configuration).

Cause

To view all the windows at once you may move some of them to a second monitor to avoid resizing and hidden windows.

Answer

It is possible to run Rational Statemate with dual monitors though it is not officially supported and there are some limitation due to MKS X/Server functionality which though bundled with Rational Statemate, IBM not responsible for it.

Some Observations/Limitations are:

  • When your system is configured to use the external monitor as second monitor on the right hand side then no problems are known.

  • When your system is configured to use the external monitor as second monitor on the left hand side, then the some pop-up and context menus may always appear on the main screen. Also new windows like chart editors, profile windows, messages and so on are always appearing on the main screen.

  • When your system is configured to swap main and external screen then additional effects can occur depending on which windows and which menus you open.

If you are using a different X/Server than MKS X/Server, then you can report your experiences and findings in the Developer Works community for Rational Statemate.
