How To
Summary
This document explains how to update firmware using the iLO 5 web interface.
To update the firmware and store files/repositories in iLO 5, you must have the "Configure iLO 5 Settings" privilege.
Steps
ILO5 supports the following component firmware upgrades from ILO5 Web Interface where applicable:
- iLO5 firmware.
- System ROM (BIOS).
- Chassis firmware (Power Management).
- Power Management Controller.
- System Programmable Logic Device (CPLD).
- NVMe Backplane Firmware.
- Innovation Engine (IE).
- Server Platform Services (SPS).
1. Obtain the firmware file for the iLO5 or server you want to update.
2. If you're updating Server Platform Services (SPS) or Innovation Engine (IE), you must shut down the server and wait 30 seconds. You can't update Innovation Engine (IE) or Server Platform Services (SPS) while the operating system is running.
- Note: If you want to update IE and SPS, you need to update IE first and then SPS.
3. Select Firmware & OS Software in the navigation tree, and then select Update Firmware.
4. Click the Local file or Remote file option.
5. Depending on your preferred option, the following will appear:
- Local file: Select "Browse" or "Select File" in "Local File" and then specify the location of the firmware file.
- Remote file: In the "Remote file URL" box, enter the URL of the firmware on an accessible web server.
- To install the firmware using the binary file, you need to extract it. Run the .exe file and select Extract.
- Once the .bin file is extracted, you can select it to run the update.
- Note: If you want to save a copy of the iLO 5 repository, you must select the Also store in iLO 5 Repository option.
- Note: If there was an updated firmware version selected in point 5, select "System Recovery Set" to replace the existing firmware.
- Note: If there is no more current firmware version, "System Recovery Set" would be disabled.
6. If your server has a TM or TPM installed, you need to abort or backup the TM or TPM information and then select "Confirm TPM override".
⚠️ CAUTION: If you use any type of encryption of data, you must suspend the software before performing the update, as otherwise, you may lose access to your data.
7. Select Flash to start the update.
8. Click OK.
⚠️ CAUTION: During the update, do not reboot or shut down the server, as it will enter standby mode and be down for approximately 20 minutes.
- Once firmware has been updated, the iLO 5 will restart and leave the connection offline for several minutes until it starts again, that is when you have to connect to the iLO 5 again and verify that the update has been completed successfully.
