How to unregister a ReportNet or Cognos 8 service

Troubleshooting


Problem

This document describes how to unregister an unwanted ReportNet or Cognos 8 service.

Symptom

[ ERROR ] A service with the same name, 'Cognos 8', is already registered. Please rename the Cognos 8 service.
or
This is not a valid win32 application.

Resolving The Problem

Use one of the following methods to unregister an unwanted Cognos service.

Delete the existing Service in Cognos Configuration
  1. Start Cognos Configuration, and under Cognos 8 service, delete the existing service.
  2. Press Start and view the progress. You will see an "unregistering Service" operation.
  3. Under Cognos 8 Service, right click to create a new service. Choose large, medium or small configuration and assign a name of your choice.
  4. Save the configuration.
  5. Click Start.

Manually run the program to un-register the previous version of Cognos 8
  1. Stop Cognos Configuration.
  2. From a command prompt:
    > cd c:\program files\cognos\c8\bin
    > Cogbootstrapservice.exe -u -name="ServiceName"
    example: > Cogbootstrapservice.exe -u -name="Cognos 8"

Manually delete the service from the Windows command line
  1. From a command prompt:
    > sc delete "ServiceName"
    e.g. sc delete "Cognos 8"
