How to troubleshooting the PCS err in Broadcom FC switch

How To

Summary

The porterrshow command on Broadcom switch shows pcs err

Steps

PCS errors are the number of Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) block errors. They are the equivalent errors to enc out but seen in 16G architecture. They are outside of the FC frame and so do not impact data.
They are generated at the time of the end device reboot as well, so as long as error count are not increasing it's not an issue.
But if the error continues to increment during normal operation then it should be addressed.
Mostly this error is due to dirty or marginal cable.
First step to resolve the issue is to clean the cable at both the ends by using cable cleaner.
If pcs err continues to increment after cleaning the cable, then replace the cable.
If problem continues after replacing the cable, then move the cable to different port on the switch and if problem moves with the cable it's the end device issue and if problem stops, then it's the SFP on the switch.
