How to install IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) on AIX Workload Partitions (WPARs)?

Answer

Installation of BigFix client:

  • To install the BigFix client in WPARs you must first install it on the underlying Logical Partition (LPAR).

    Client can be installed in the LPAR using any mechanism provided by BigFix, for example using the following command:

    • installp –agqYXd <path_to_pkg_installation_file> BESClient

    To install the client in a WPAR, synchronize the WPAR with its LPAR and run the following command in each WPAR:

    • installp -agX -Or BESClient
Installation of ILMT scanners

  • To install scanners in WPARs, first install them on the underlying LPARs. Then install the scanners in the WPARs. Use the standard “Install or Upgrade Scanner” fixlet; no manual actions are required in the WPARs. The fixlet does not enforce the installation sequence, so you must manage it manually.

    Upgrade the scanner in the same order: first on the LPAR, then on the WPARs hosted by that LPAR.


Support considerations:
    • AIX WPARs are supported by ILMT. The technology is also eligible for PVU sub‑capacity licensing.
    • Support for AIX WPARs in IBM BigFix Platform is limited to ILMT scenarios. Any BigFix issue observed on an AIX WPAR will be investigated and addressed only if it can be reproduced on a standard AIX LPAR.
    • IBM BigFix Platform does not provide any official procedure (e.g., install, upgrade) dedicated to WPAR environments. This technote summarizes all the current “know‑how” in the context of LMT 9.x. Customers can submit a request for enhancement (RFE) to have WPARs officially supported by IBM BigFix for use cases other than LMT if they wish.
