How to re-enable hyper-threading on an IBM Smart Analytics System 5600.

Answer

The IBM Smart Analytics System 5600 is shipped with hyper-threading enabled. If you run "cat /proc/cpuinfo" you will see that the number of processors reported is more than the number of CPU cores.

For example, a IBM Smart Analytics System 5600 R2 x3650 M3 server has a one CPU with 6 cores, and each core can run 2 threads. If you run "cat /proc/cpuinfo", you will see 12 processors listed.

If for some reason you see that the number of processors is equal to the number of CPU cores, it is possible that hyper-threading has been disabled. You may use the following steps to re-enable hyper-threading.

  1. Create a file with the following content:

    set uEFI.ProcessorHyperThreading Enable
  2. Run the asu64 command below:

    /opt/ibm/toolscenter/asu/asu64 batch <filename> --host <server's-IMM-IP-address> --user USERID --password PASSW0RD

    The default user id is "USERID" and the password is "PASSW0RD". Note the number "0" in "PASSW0RD".
  3. Reboot the server.

After rebooting there server, "cat /proc/cpuinfo" should now show the correct number of processors.
