How to properly health check an API Connect gateway

Troubleshooting

Problem

Often load balancers use simple TCP or similar lightweight default health checks that do NOT properly mark the gateways down.
This can result in a failure for both the management communication to the API Connect Gateway and also for the client to API Gateway, API invocation.

Symptom

The API manager will report failures connecting through the load balanced address when trying to reach the gateways.
The client trying to invoke an API request will fail when going through the load balanced address to the gateways.
