This document is a how-to step by step guide to install the GNU tar RPM on AIX, as it is needed for extracting the Spectrum Control installation media. The RPM package is a must have and there is no work around for the extraction.
When you extract the Spectrum Control installation images, use the GNU tar program instead of the AIX tape archive program (tar). The AIX tar program might truncate long file names, which can cause installation errors in IBM Spectrum Control.
