How to increase the maximum heap size of a Java application

Summary

Sometimes the default maximum heap size (-Xmx value) of a Java application is not big enough to meet your needs. This technote shows how to increase the maximum heap size to a more appropriate value.

For 32-bit applications, the safe maximum -Xmx setting is capped at approximately 1400m (the value might vary slightly on a machine-by-machine basis).
