How to extend the RUP glossary

Troubleshooting

Problem

Pre-built Rational Unified Process® (RUP®) has a set of glossary terms which a client may wish to alter as part of customizing RUP. Using RUP, the glossary can be opened by clicking the Glossary link at the top of a published RUP web site. Following this link will display the alphabetical glossary list.

Resolving The Problem

There are two methods that may be used to modify the contents of the RUP glossary. Which method to use depends on whether the RUP customization is accomplished through a thin or a structural plug-in.

If a thin plug-in is used, then you must edit the existing glossary.xml file. The glossary.xml file is located in the process\glossary folder under your selected RUP Builder configuration. By default this is C:\Documents and Settings\<User ID>\My Documents\RUPBuilder\repository\rup\base_process\content_library\process\glossary. Be sure to create a backup of your glossary.xml file prior to performing any edits. When RUP Builder publishes your configuration, the new glossary.xml file contents will be published.

If a structural plug-in is used, then you can extend the RUP glossary by adding your own xml file glossary definition and placing it into the content_library\process folder under your structural plug-in's configuration.

The RUP .NET plug-in contains a good example of a structural plug-in glossary customization.

As part of the publishing process, RUP Builder will load the xml file or files and generate a single glossary.htm file during the publishing.
