Enabling Multi-Factor-Authentication for the IBMid

Steps

If your IBMid account does not have any MFA enrolled you will get the following screen (Red Square).


Enrolling on IBM Security Verify App

After you have already installed the IBM Security Verify app on your phone, select “Yes, it is already installed” (Orange arrow). If you haven’t installed the app on your phone, select “No, I need to install it” (Purple arrow), this will take you to a page with the instructions on how to install the app.

After you installed the application on your phone, you should go to the IBM Security Verify app on your phone, and scan the QR code on your screen.

Finally, once you have set up your app, you should click on “Verify your device” (blue arrow above) this will send a push notification to your phone which you must approve in order to properly validate your MFA.

Enrolling an Authenticator App

If your IBMid account does not have any MFA enrolled you will get the following screen (Purple square).

Once you click on “Authenticator app”, you should name your 2FA, we recommend that you name it according the application you are using, to avoid confussion in the future.

After you have named your MFA click on “Proceed enrollment” (orange arrow above) and with your authenticator app on your phone, scan the QR code showed on screen.

Your phone should give you a 6 digit code that is constantly changing, you must enter this code to complete the MFA challenge.

Enrolling a Device with Biometrics Sensor

If your IBMid account does not have any MFA enrolled you will get the following screen (Blue square).

After you clicked on “Device with biometrics sensor”, you will get the below screen, click on “Next: Connect your account” (red arrow).

If you are using Google Chrome and your computer has a bulit in biometric sensor, you will have to click on “Continue” (green arrow) to create the passkey.

Once you click on continue, you should get the below pop-up with the request to touch your Touch ID to complete the MFA challenge.

Your MFA should now be successfully enrolled and you should receive the next screen.

Enrolling using a Hardware Security key

If your IBMid account does not have any MFA enrolled you will get the following screen (Black square).

After clicking on “Hardware Security Key”, you will get the following screen. Click on “Next: Connect your account” (blue arrow).

When the following pop-up window is given, press on your security key.

Enter the correct pin for your security key.

Click on “Allow” (green arrow)

To verify your MFA just press on your hardware security key.

Enrolling Email as 2FA

If your IBMid account does not have any MFA enrolled you will get the following screen (Green square).

After clicking on Email, you should be taken to the below page, where you must enter your email, which will be used to send a verification code that would be needed to complete the MFA challenge.

This will send an email to your inbox with the verification code that would need to be feeded into the text field on screen.

You should only enter the 6 digit code that are after the “-”.

After you complete the MFA challenge you should get the confirmation that your email address was successfully added as a verification method.

The IBMid team highly recommends for all users to have more than one authentication method configured as this will avoid future lockouts.

After you have enrolled with one method you can add more by clicking on “Add new methods”.

Available Methods

IBM Verify App

  • This is an enrolled factor that uses the IBM Verify app (located in both iOS and Android app stores) to support push notifications. When you select approve, access will be granted.

Authenticator app (time-based one-time password)

  • A randomly generated code is provided in the authenticator app. This method can be configured with IBM Verify, Duo, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and other apps following this standard.

Email one-time passcode

  • A one-time code is sent to your email address.

Passkey

  • Use your local device authenticator or a hardware security key for authentication.
