There are typically 2 preconditions where a password might need to be modified:

  1. You know the current admin password and wish to change it
  2. You do not have the current admin password and need to reset it
In the first case, a simple "auth set user admin" command while logged into the Management server will prompt you for the current password and allow you to enter a new password:
User-added image

In the second case how you proceed will depend upon the recovery setting which can be interrogated using this command:
auth show recovery
For example:
User-added image

The state of this setting ("on" by default) will determine whether or not the admin password can be reset from the serial console of the Management server.

Recovery Enabled

If the returned value is "on" a password reset can only occur if the user can verify that they have serial console access and prove that they are not accessing the Management server over a remote port replicator.?
i) Enter the word "resetpass" as the user name at the login prompt. Type in any string of characters for the password (doesn't have to be the new password):
User-added image

Hit Enter and you will get the prompt:
User-added image

ii) Since the Management server is a virtual appliance to "unplug the ethernet cable" involves disconnecting the the virtual network adapter in your virtualization software (in VMWare for instance unchecking the "Connect Network Adapter" checkbox effectively unplugs the ethernet cable):
User-added image

iii) Back at the serial console hit Enter. You will get this prompt:
User-added image

iv) At this point go back to the visualization software (VMWare) and reconnect the adapter - enabling the checkbox.
v) At the serial console hit Enter and you will be prompted to enter a new password for the user admin:
User-added image

The entire sequence of steps in the serial console would look like this:
User-added image

Recovery Disabled

If the returned value is "off" then the password reset process will not require verification of access to the serial console.
