How to determine the backend database name for the db2ldif command

Troubleshooting

Problem

The iPlanet Directory Server, and SunOne Directory Server both have the db2ldif backup command available to export the database files to a text export document. One of the required parameters of the command is the database reference and can be identified as follows. By default the backend instance is usually called "userRoot" but if this has been changed then the proper backend instance must be identified.

Symptom

The db2ldif command uses the -n switch to specify the backend instance name as follows:

C:\iPlanet\Servers\slapd-cognos\db2ldif -n BACKEND_NAME

If the incorrect backend instance is specified then the following message will be returned:

DD/MMM/YYYY:H24:MI:SS -0500] - ERROR: Could not find backend 'BACKEND_NAME'

where the beginning portion of the message is the current date-timestamp.
