Troubleshooting
Problem
This document provides the steps to delete an IBM i client (hosted by IBM i) and have the available storage returned to the Host partition.
Resolving The Problem
1) Shutdown the Client partition through the HMC or Client partition's operating system command line:
*Note: Examples shown use the option to shut down immediately.
From the HMC:

Select the Client partition (checkmark the box next to the client partition)
On the top right, select Operations > Shutdown Partition

AIX and Linux:
shutdown -F
2) Delete the Client partition from the HMC:
Select the Client partition (checkmark the box next to the client partition)
On the top right, select Operations > Delete Partition
If service partition, will need to have the partition shutdown
Select the server (checkbox)
Properties
On general tab, drop down the service partition and select Unassigned
3) Vary off the Client NWSD:

3) Vary off the Client NWSD:
On the Host partition 5250 session, type WRKCFGSTS *NWS and press Enter. Select option 2=Vary off for the Client partition you plan to delete. This will vary off the network server description.
4) Unlink the Client storage spaces (virtual disk units) associated with the Client NWSD:

WRKNWSSTG and press Enter. Select option 11=Remove link on each of the disk units associated to the Client LPAR that you deleted.
5) Delete the unlinked Client storage spaces:
On the WRKNWSTG and select option 4=Delete the desired storage spaces that are no longer linked.
*Note: When the storage space is deleted the available free storage will be returned to the ASP. Larger storage spaces can take several minutes. WRKSYSSTS can be viewed to see the total % of storage used being decreased to have more available storage.
6) Delete the Client partition's Network Server Description (NWSD):

WRKNWSD and press Enter. Select option 4=Delete on the desired NWSD to be deleted.
