How to define the width of a string variable when importing via ODBC to SPSS/PASW Statistics?

Question & Answer

Question

I am using SPSS/PASW Statistics for Windows and am having trouble importing string variables greater than 255 bytes. Fields larger than this produce can produce either of these messages in the output: Error 1115 SQLFetch (getting tables) failed :[driver name]String data, right truncated on column number 45 (variable name). Is there a way to specify the width of the strings during the import procedure so the data is not truncated?
