How to configure i2 iBase so Smart Match will work with items charted to Analyst's Notebook

How To

Summary

You have charted items from iBase to Analyst's Notebook and you want to check for matching entities using Smart Match, but you are not getting matches for items you think should match. In this "How to" technote, we will look at what configuration settings must be in place for "Smart Match" to work.

Objective

Smart Match uses the values of item attributes in order to determine if two items match.  We first need to make sure the attributes are defined with the correct semantic types used for matching.  We then need to make sure the information from iBase is carried over to Analyst's Notebook when items are charted.  The example in this technote will illustrate the changes needed for Person matches, but the same steps (with different attributes) will apply to other entity types.

Steps

Ensure proper Semantic Types

In iBase, inspect the fields of your Person-type Entities to make sure they contain a semantic type for the properties used during Smart Matching.  If you need to add the semantic type, Edit the field to add the semantic type in iBase Designer:

Do these steps for each person-type in iBase Designer :
  1. Select the Entity for the person type.  This will list the defined fields for the Entity to the right.
  2. For each field that needs a Semantic type added, double click the field to bring up the Edit dialog.
  3. At the bottom of the dialog to the right of the Semantic Type field click on the [...] button. This opens the field Semantic Type dialog.
  4. In the Ordered Results, select the appropriate description for the field.  This will set the Semantic type.
  5. Click ok to set the Semantic type.
  6. Click ok to set the Field change.
The Semantic types used for Person-type matching include the following:
  • National Identifier
  • Person Full Name
  • Person First name
  • Person Middle Names
  • Person Last Name
Other Person Semantic types that can contribute to a match are as follows:
  • Email Address
  • Date Of Birth
  • Person Title
  • Person Suffix
  • Gender

From iBase User, you can see check if your Entity has the correct Semantic Types defined.

  1. Select the Entity in the Explorer pane

  2. In the bottom section with the field definitions, slide the bottom bar to the right to see the Semantic Type column

  3. Ensure you have the Semantic types defined for the fields used in Smart Match

For a list of the Semantic types needed for other Entity types see the following details in the i2 Analyst's Notebook User's guide:

Update the Charting Scheme

In iBase User, check your Charting Scheme to make sure it will pass data along with your Entity to i2 Analyst's Notebook.  When you add data from iBase, you will be asked to select a Charting scheme to apply when the data is added to your chart.  Make sure you have a Charting scheme where the Data Records have a value of either "Assigned Only" or "All"

Specify the Charting Scheme in i2 Analyst's Notebook

In i2 Analyst's Notebook, after you connect to iBase, in the Data Source pane, do the following steps to ensure you are using the Charting scheme you setup in the prior step.
In the Data Source pane, under the "Association & Timeline Options:", click on the "Edit..." link to open the Options dialog.
Make sure your Charting Scheme defined in iBase is selected under Charting Scheme.

Add your ibase data to the chart  either from iBase (right click item(s), then Chart -> Add to Chart), or from a Query from the Data Sources pane in Analyst's Notebook (right click item(s), then Add to Chart).  You can now run Smart Match against the persons.
  1. From the Analyze Menu, select Find Matching Entities
  2. In the Find Matching Entities pane, select "Smart Matching" from the pulldown selection.
  3. Click on Find
  4. Within a Matched Set, you can get more details about the match decision by double clicking on the Match link
  5. In the Edit Link Description box, you can see the match criteria used to contribute to the matching score
