Question & Answer
Question
If a PTF gets Superseded, shouldn't that remove the PTF from the SMPPTS? Is there some setting that will force a PTF to be deleted from the PTS once it is SUP'ed? I am asking this because my PTS has grown considerably recently.
Answer
As you are no doubt aware, when one PTF SUP's another it is because it is providing the same function as the one being SUP'd (along with other changes unrelated to the PTF being SUP'd).
When neither the SUPing or SUP'd PTF have yet been applied, you have the choice of installing just the SUP'd maintenance (by only applying the SUP'd PTF) or installing all with one PTF the SUPing PTF).
"If a PTF gets sup'ed shouldn't that remove the PTF from the SMPPTS?"
No. A PTF is only removed from the SMPPTS during the ACCEPT process (if the PURGE (default) option is in effect) or during REJECT processing.
"Is there some setting that will force a PTF to be deleted from the PTS once it is SUP'ed?"
No. There is no option to have SUP'd PTFs deleted from the PTFs when a SUPing PTF is received (or applied).
Like non-SUP'd PTFs, a SUP'd PTF should also be removed from the SMPPTS dataset during the ACCEPT process.
They may not be deleted if the PURGE option is not in effect or BYPASS(APPLY) was coded on the ACCEPT.
To clean up the SMPPTS, you can use the SMP/E REJECT PURGE command.
