How to change LAN Console to utilize 27x132 device

Summary

This document explains how to migrate your LAN Console session from using a 3179 device (24x80) to a 3477 device (27x132). In order to be able to do this you will need to be at V7R2 or later of IBM i OS and a current cumulative package is recommended.

Steps

Step 1- Determining current console device and type
- Get a 5250 session to the system
- Issue command DSPSYSVAL QCONSOLE

This shows you the current device name that is being used for your console session
- Check the device type by running the command WRKDEVD [device name]

- The Type of 3179 confirms that this is currently a 24x80 device
Modifying the console to utilize a 3477 (27x132) device
- Connect your console session via ACS.  Once you have the sign on session no need to sign on
- On the menu bar hit Communications -> Configure:

- Change the screen size to 27x132:

- Click Ok.  You will get this message notifying you that the session will need to be restarted:

If you have Console Takeover and Recovery enabled (highly recommended you do) you will get this screen:

- It is not a displayed option, but F18 (Shift +F6) from this screen will restart the console job and get you past this screen.  It is at this point that the device is changed from 3179 to 3477:
Step 3- Verifying the device has changed:
- On a 5250 session, issue command WRKDEVD [device name]

You will notice that the Device Type is now 3477 which will utilize a 27x132 screen size.
