How to capture a screen shot using the CDE on Solaris

Question & Answer

Question

How do I capture screen shots in the Common Desktop Environment to assist IBM® Rational® Support troubleshoot GUI problems on Solaris®.

Answer

The Common Desktop Environment (CDE) is an integrated graphical user interface for open systems desktop computing. It delivers a single, standard graphical interface for the management of data and files (the graphical desktop) and applications.

In order to effectively troubleshoot GUI (Graphical User Interface) issues, it is often helpful to receive a screen shot of the problem. The following procedure outlines how to capture screen shots on Solaris within the CDE environment.

  1. Prepare the screen so that it displays the image that is to be captured.

  2. Right click in the background to get the 'Workspace Menu'

  3. Choose Applications > Snapshot and an image viewer GUI will start up along with a small pop-up window with radio button choices of what to capture: one window, a region, or the whole screen. There is also an option to set the delay so that it snaps the picture a few seconds later.

  4. To capture the image, click Snap and then wait until you see "Snap succeeded" at the bottom of the pop-up window.

  5. The snapshot has been taken and it can be edited with the Image Viewer - Palette that comes up.

Note: the image has not been saved yet.

  6. Close the palette and close the pop-up window, and what remains is the screen shot image.

  7. In this Image Viewer - Untitled window, select File > Save As to save the image.

  8. To view a screen shot that was created in this way and saved as a Sun Raster file, TIFF, or XPM: bring up the Image Viewer > File > Open and give the pathname to the file to open.
