How can I install IBM Cognos Planning in the same environment as 64-bit IBM Cognos Business Intelligence?

Question & Answer

Question

How can I install 32-bit IBM Cognos Enterprise Planning (EP) in the same environment as 64-bit IBM Cognos Business Intelligence (BI)?

Answer

NOTE : This is not possible for a single server installation.

From the Installation Guide :
You cannot install Planning on the same computer as an existing BI 64-bit installation but you can have other 64-bit BI computers as part of the environment. For example, you can use a 64-bit Content Store.

When installing a mixture of 64-bit and 32-bit Cognos products in a single environment, the 32-bit instance of the appropriate version of the BI gateway should be used. The 32-bit Gateway components for each product (Planning, BI, Metric Studio etc.) should all be installed to a single location on the Gateway or web server(s); and the 64-bit BI Gateway component is not required (however it does not need to be un-installed; if you are adding 32-bit components to an existing 64-bit BI environment, you can install each of the 32-bit Gateways to a new location on the server, and then simply re-configure IIS to reference the 32-bit Gateway location).

For a typical two-server set up of Planning and Business Intelligence, where Server 1 is the Gateway and BI machine, and Server 2 is the Planning machine, you might install the 64-bit BI Content Manager and Application tier components to \\Server1\Program Files\ibm\cognos\c10; both the 32-bit BI and EP Gateway components to \\Server1\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10; and the EP Content Manager and Application tier components to \\Server2\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10.

For a typical three-server set up of Planning and Business Intelligence, where Server 1 is the Gateway, Server 2 is the BI machine, and Server 3 is the Planning machine, you might install both the 32-bit BI and EP Gateway components to \\Server1\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10; the 64-bit BI Content Manager and Application tier components to \\Server2\Program Files\ibm\cognos\c10; and the EP Content Manager and Application tier components to \\Server3\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10.

In both the above examples, the 32-bit Gateway install location would be used when configuring the Virtual Directories in IIS on Server1, so the 'ibmcognos' virtual directory would be pointing to ..\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10\webcontent; and the 'cgi-bin' virtual directory to ..\Program Files (x86)\ibm\cognos\c10\cgi-bin.
