How to Access VIOS Command Line from an SSH Session Within an i Partition

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to get access to the VIOS command line from an SSH session within an i partition.

Resolving The Problem

The 5250 character-based applications started by using the STRQSH or CALL QP2TERM CL commands are not true TTY devices. This can cause problems when trying to use SSH, SFTP, or SCP within one of these sessions.

If you use the -T option on the ssh command, you should be able to overcome the error and get command line access to the VIOS (or AIX) server. For example, use the following command:

ssh -T padmin@<VIOS server name>

where <VIOS server name> = the name of your VIOS server.

Without the -T option on the command, you will see the following errors:

tcgetattr: A system call received a parameter that is not valid.                                                      Connection to <VIOS server name> closed.
