Hot code replace in JSF managed bean method fails with error message Obsolete method on stack

Troubleshooting

Problem

This technote explains that you might not be able to hot code replace a class into the debugged JVM from IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software. Specifically this happens when you hot code replace while stopped on a breakpoint in a constructor, action method or validation method within a JSF managed bean which is running IBM WebSphere Application Server or IBM WebSphere Portal Server.

Symptom

Reproduction steps:

  1. Create a new Dynamic Web Project
  2. Create a new web page index.jsp
  3. Within the view Palette, add from tab Enhanced Faces Commands the component Button - Command.
  4. Within the view Properties, select Code the action and add as dummy code System.out.println("action"); to the action method within the view Quick Edit.
  5. Within the class pagecode.Index add a constructor and set breakpoints in the action method doButton1Action and the constructor.
  6. Debug the web page index.jsp on the server
  7. Change the text action to action2 within the method doButton1Action

Result:

Error dialog "Obsolete method on the Stack" is shown.
