Host memory usage
Resolving The Problem
Issue
vCenter triggers a high host memory usage alarm.
Troubleshooting
- Verify that VMware Tools is installed on each VM. The balloon driver is installed with VMware Tools and is critical to memory performance of the host.
- Verify that the balloon driver is enabled because the VMkernel regularly reclaims unused VM memory by using techniques such as ballooning and swapping. Typically enabling the balloon driver does not impact VM performance.
- If possible, reduce the memory made available to the VM as this frees up memory for other VMs. If the memory reservation of the VM is set to a value higher than its active memory, decrease the reservation setting so that the VMkernel can reclaim the idle memory for other VMs on the host.
- If memory cannot be reclaimed, then you need to add more capacity to the cluster by adding additional hosts, refer to the IBM Cloud article Expanding and contracting capacity for vCenter Server instances.
