Troubleshooting


Problem

Failure when trying to query "Virtual Networks" via HMC Enhanced GUI:
> All systems
> Managed system name
> Virtual Networks




          


          
  

        
Symptom

                    


The follow error may repeat for more than one VIO Server.



"Error occurred while querying for SharedEthernetAdapter from VIOS <VIOS_PARTITION_NAME> with ID <VIOS_PARTITION_ID) in System <MANAGED_SYSTEM_NAME>- Unable to connect to Database."







          


          
          
          
          
          
  

        
Cause

                    
1. VIOS hostname cannot be resolved.



2. vgpadmin user ID does not belong to the correct groups.


          


          
          
  

        
Environment

                    
PowerVM VIOS 3.1 or higher managed by a Hardware Management Console (HMC)





          


          
          
          
  

        
Resolving The Problem

                    
Probable Cause #1 - Hostname cannot be resolved



Issue may be with the VIOS hostname resolution.  Hostname resolution is important because if the hostname IP look up does not resolve as expected then this causes internal DB to have trouble resolving the hostname needed for communicating with the HMC.








Recommendation:



Determine if there is trouble resolving the VIOS hostname.  Note:  The FQDN must be done when doing local name resolution.








Ensure VIOS hostname resolution is getting resolved for the VIOS partition(s) in question.  For how-to details, refer to the support document below or contact your IBM SupportLine Network Specialist.







Probable Cause #2 - vgpadmin user ID does not belong to the correct groups



System user, vpgadmin, is not a member of the groups, system and staff.






Recommendation:
