HMC DSA log collection

How To


Summary

The HMC Dynamic System Analysis log is used by IBM Hardware Support personnel to troubleshoot & isolate HMC-related hardware issues.

Objective

This document is intended to describe how to collect the Dynamic System Analysis log from a Hardware Management Console (machine type 7042) and how to upload it to IBM Support.

Steps

Attention:
Log collection is a disruptive task, meaning that the respective HMC needs to be rebooted in order to capture the DSA log.
The DSA can be obtained from machine type 7042 only.
This feature is not applicable to machine type 7063.


1. Insert a FAT32 formatted USB key to any of the HMC's USB ports.

2. Reboot the HMC gracefully.

3. When prompted, press the F2-button (during initialization) to access the Diagnostic utility.

4. When the 'Memory Test' screen appears, select the 'Quit' option to enter the DSA utility:

5. The DSA tool starts loading, when prompted - type: gui

6. Accept the license agreement:

7. Navigate to 'Collection and Diagnosis' tab, then click the 'Full Inventory Collection and Diagnosis' option:

8. On the screen that shows next, make sure that the following data is added:
 - Select 'Collect System Inventory';
 - Select 'Run Diagnostic Tests' with 'Full test (CPU and memory stress test included)' option marked;
 - Check whether the previously inserted USB key is shown under 'Save to removable media' option and select it in order to offload the data onto that device.


9. Click 'Run Now' to start the tests and data collection process:

10. The data is copied onto the USB media when the tests & collection complete:

11. Exit the utility, by hitting the 'Exit' button.

12. Type exit and press Enter. The HMC reboots normally.

13. Unplug the USB key from the HMC USB port;

14. Upload the DSA log to ECuRep:
