HMC Code Upgrades/ Updates Failures

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document goes over the initial troubleshooting and data to collect if you are updating or upgrading HMC.

Diagnosing The Problem

Upgrading or updating the Hardware Management Console (HMC) code is a critical task to ensure optimal performance, security, and compatibility.  However, instances of failures during the upgrade/update process can occur, leading to potential disruptions in operations. This document aims to outline common issues, potential causes, and recommended solutions for addressing HMC code upgrade/update failures.  Retry the Code update/upgrade process before resorting to opening a support ticket.

Common Issues:

1. Incompatibility with Hardware:
HMC code might not  be compatible with the target-hardware. Check hardware compatibility matrices and ensure that the HMC version aligns with the supported hardware. For more information, see the HMC compatibility Matrix
2. Communication Errors:

Failures in communication between the HMC and target Managed systems. Verify that the targeted Code level is compatible with all Managed systems connected to the HMC.

For example checking for compatibility log into Fix Central Select the product in our case would be like following ;

Select the Desired FW level then Click on Description.

Under the Minimum HMC Code level, check the minimum levels accepted  and HMC models supported by the Managed system.

MinHMCCodeLevel

3. Insufficient Resources:

Lack of resources (memory, storage) for the upgrade process. Ensure that the HMC has sufficient Storage, especially on the root file system.

4. Incomplete Downloads:

Corrupted or incomplete download of the HMC code. Redownload the HMC code from Fix Central and verify its integrity.

5. Incorrect Installation Procedure:

Errors during the installation process. Carefully follow the readme file for HMC code upgrades and ensure that each step is accurately executed.

Mitigation and troubleshooting:

Backup:

  • Always perform a comprehensive backup of critical data and configurations before initiating any upgrade/update process. This ensures that, if a failure occurs, the system can be restored to a functional state.

Check Errors:

  • Examine for any error messages or warnings during the upgrade/update process and document or take a screenshot.

Engage Support:

  • If issues persist, it is advisable to engage HMC technical support. Provide detailed information about the issue, including logs (Collect and upload a Pedbg) and error messages to expedite the resolution process.
