Troubleshooting
Problem
RETAIN tip: H212620
Symptom
When adding additional disk drives to an existing Dynamic Disk Pool (DDP) in an IBM System Storage DS Storage Controller, the Storage Manager Client does not warn the user when adding disk drives that are larger than the disk drives that already exist in the DDP. The resulting capacity of the DDP will only be increased by the number of new drives multiplied by the size of the current disk drives in the DDP and not the larger size of the drives being added.
This will result in the useable capacity of the DDP being smaller than one would expect when the larger drives are added.
No warning message is given to the user when the larger drives are added to the DDP. However, when larger capacity drives are added to a standard array, a warning message is issued telling the user that unusable capacity will be created.
Affected configurations
The system may be any of the following IBM servers:
- IBM System Storage DCS3700 Storage Subsystem, type 1818, any model
- IBM System Storage DCS3860 Storage Subsystem, type 1813, any model
- IBM System Storage DS3512, type 1746, any model
- IBM System Storage DS3524, type 1746, any model
This tip is not software specific.
This tip is not option specific.
The system has the symptom described above.
Solution
This is a permanent restriction.
Workaround
No workaround exists other than to be aware of the size of the new drives being added to the DDP and ensure that they are of the same size as the current drives in the DDP. Otherwise, there will be unusable capacity on the newer drives.
Additional information
Varying drive capacities were not taken into account in the implementation.
