Problem
RETAIN tip: H202849
Symptom
Dynamic Volume Expansion (DVE) is not possible on a LUN which is in an active mirror relationship and which the write-mode is 'Asynchronous not write-consistent'. The DVE is not possible on either the primary or on the secondary LUN. The DVE is possible, if the write-mode is 'Synchronous' or 'Asynchronous write-consistent'. The DVE is also not possible on a FlashCopy Repository of the secondary volume.
1. xx.xx.xx: Error 18. The operation cannot complete because of an internal target error
2. xx.xx.xx: Error 458. A logical drive expansion operation cannot be performed because a logical drive is part of an asynchronous mirror relationship.

If a DVE is attempted in the above scenario, the following message will be observed:
1. xx.xx.xx: Error 18. The operation cannot complete because of an internal target error
2. xx.xx.xx: Error 458. A logical drive expansion operation cannot be performed because a logical drive is part of an asynchronous mirror relationship.

- DS4700 Storage Server, type 1814, any model
- DS4800 Storage Server, type 1815, any model
- DS5020 Disk Controller (1814-20A), any model
- DS5100 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model
- DS5300 Storage Controller, type 1818, any model
- IBM System Storage DS3512, type 1746, any model
- IBM System Storage DS3524, type 1746, any model
- IBM System Storage DS3950 Express, type 1814, any model

Workaround
Set the write-mode of the mirrored primary volume from 'Asynchronous not write-consistent', to 'Asynchronous write-consistent' or 'Synchronous' to run DVE. When the DVE is finished, reset the write-mode back to 'Asynchronous not write-consistent'.
Additional information
The controller firmware explicitly checks for an asynchronous mirror and prevents the DVE in that case. The status return may make this look like a defect, but is an implementation decision instead.
