Guardium Data Protection with Oracle Exadata

News

Abstract

The IBM Security Guardium Data Protection solution has supported and continues to support Oracle Exadata as a monitored data source.

Content

The IBM Security Guardium Data Protection solution has supported and continues to support Oracle Exadata as a monitored data source. This includes the installation of Guardium agents on the database nodes of the Exadata appliances. We have various customers that are running this configuration without any issues with Oracle support contracts. Additionally, we have ensured that the matter of allowing agents on the Exadata platform is described in the Oracle documentation and policies, as defined by the Oracle Support organization headquarters.  Oracle is a strategic partner for IBM. IBM has a TSANET contract as an Oracle Partner that certifies that our support organizations are connected to make support issues transparent to the customer.
The specific Oracle Exadata documentation referenced above can be verified here with your own Oracle support id.  It states:
Applies to:
Oracle Exadata Storage Server Software - Version 11.1.3.1.0 and later
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal
Is it acceptable / supported to install additional or 3rd party software on Exadata machines?

Solution
Answer is a qualified yes (Customers can add software ONLY to the DB Nodes, never to the storage cells).
Items to consider before installing additional RPMS:
1) Customer installed software must not update any Exadata provided packages.
2) Customer is fully responsible for the additional software.
3) Future Exadata Software updates may remove customer installed packages or the upgrades may fail due to customer installed packages.
4) If a customer installed package is needed to be removed as part of an Exadata Software update, the customer is responsible for removal of the package and re-installing, if needed after the upgrade..

For the latest information on the Exadata Software Update process, its behavior with package additions, removals and the Exadata Computenode Minimal RPM, please refer to:
Note 1553103.1 - Exadata Database Server Patching using the DB Node Update Utility

This statement relates to the Guardium agent as follows:
•    Guardium agents are allowed in a Exadata appliance since they are installed on the DB nodes only.
•    Guardium agents do not affect Exadata packages.
•    Customer is responsible for the Guardium agent as defined by the IBM support contract.
•    Exadata may remove any agents installed as part of an update.
•    Customer may be required to remove the agent for an update or if troubleshooting of a support issue requires it.
None of these policies voids the Oracle Exadata support contract.
