Symptom
The following tip describes, how to perform a functional self test of the following Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units:
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV, 2130-3RX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV, 2130-3JX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV. 2130-6RX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 10000XHV, 2130-4RX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV, 2130-4JX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV, 2130-8RX
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 5000VA HV, 2419-5KX
This test determines if there is a UPS fault present or utility power issue.
For completing the outlined steps, the relevant UPS User Guide is required:
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 7500XHV, IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 10000XHV "Operation and Setup Guide", which is available at the following URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-58641
- IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply 5000 XHV (2419) "Installation and User's Guide", which is available at the following URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5082280
Affected configurations
The system is configured with one or more of the following IBM Options:
- IBM 10000 UPS, type 2130, any model
- IBM 5000 UPS, type 2419, any model
- IBM 7500 UPS, type 2130, any model

Additional information
- Ensure that the batteries are properly connected to the base UPS unit.
- Ensure that the batteries are fully charged.
- Disconnect any IBM UPS 3U Run Online Battery Pack, Option part number 25R5582 or 39Y8857. This part is used to extend the run time of the base UPS unit.
- Ensure the UPS is powered off completely. For further information see RETAIN H191863 "2130: How to completely shut down an IBM Uninterruptible Power Supply", which is available at the following URL: http://www.ibm.com/support/entry/portal/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5072772
- Once the UPS is powered off, remove the utility power to the UPS unit. This can be done by switching off the circuit breaker protecting the utility power.
- Press and hold the UPS start button until you hear the second beep, then release. The UPS will power up from batteries.
If the UPS powers up, this confirms the internal electronics of the UPS is functioning correctly.
If the UPS will not turn on when utility power is applied, then it may be caused by one of the following:
- The power input connectors of the UPS unit.
- Problems with the utility power.
To determine if the power input connectors are the cause, install a UPS chassis for test purposes. In that case, ensure the wiring has been correctly completed according to local regulations and relevant UPS documentation.
In 90 percent of cases exhibiting these issues, the above test has confirmed problems with utility power and/or input wiring. This can be verified by supplying the relevant UPS NMC logs.
