FTP426 Reply Code Received When Transferring a Large File using FTP

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes a potential cause of an FTP reply code of 426 when running a GET command to transfer a large file.

Resolving The Problem

An FTP 426 reply code will be issued by the FTP client on the IBM® System i® products if a timeout is reached. You will see
the two following messages within your FTP session:

426-Unable to send data to TCP/IP.
426 Data transfer ended.

These messages may occur in case of a large file if the system has not had enough time to allocate the storage required to receive the data before the timeout is reached. These actions may avoid the issue:
1)  Clear the target file at the operating system level before starting the GET.
2) Check that sufficient storage exists in the ASP to contain the target file.
3) Increase timeout values using the FTP command  QUOTE TIME.  For example, QUOTE TIME 2000 2000.
This command exists in all supported IBM i releases. See the link in the Related Information section of this document for more information.
