FoD missing key - IBM Flex System x440 Compute Node (7917)

Symptom

Several IBM Flex System x440 Compute Nodes (type 7917) were shipped with only one Function on Demand (FoD) key. However, each system shipped with two LAN-on-motherbord (LOM) have unique ASIC S/N per chip, and require a separate FoD key to activate the ports.

This issue is seen if only one FoD key was shipped per system. The LOM ports do not become active, and there is no activity seen on the second port.

Affected configurations

The system can be any of the following IBM servers:

• Flex System x440 Compute Node, type 7917, any model

Solution

When the above symptom is observed, the user needs to reset the UID value by notifying IBM FoD support to generate a key that can be downloaded, so that ports become active. Once the key is generated, complete these steps to reset the UID on the affected systems:

1. Navigate to the Features on Demand Web site:
   • www.ibm.com/systems/x/fod
2. Login with the IBM ID and select Hardware replacement.
3. Select the machine type (7917), enter the serial number, and click Continue.
4. The Web site lists all keys available for a UID reset, one of the keys will have a UID "RESET00VIA00HW00REPLACEMENT000xx".
5. Select this activation and click Continue.
6. Using local tools, determine the ASIC S/N of the ASIC that is missing its FoD activation, and enter the value in the New UID line.
7. Continue through the confirmation panels and return to the main Features on Demand page.
8. Select Retrieve history.
9. Select Search via machine type serial number and enter the machine type and serial number.
10. On the results page, select the new key, email, download it and install using one of the available tools such as Integrated Management Module (IMM), Dynamic System Analysis (DSA), and so forth.

Additional information

Each LOM ordered requires its own individual FoD key.
