Troubleshooting
Problem
One method for finding the serial number of a system is to connect a PC directly into the FSP and access Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).
Resolving The Problem
Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to a PC and the other end to the HMC1 port at the back of the system. You can see the system serial number on the initial Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI) page.
Some guidelines for accessing ASMI on a new system (with default IP addresses assigned to the FSP) follow:
For Power5 systems:
Port | IP Address | Subnet Mask |
HMC1 | 192.168.2.147 | 255.255.255.0 |
HMC2 | 192.168.3.147 | 255.255.255.0 |
For Power6 systems:
Service Processor A: | ||
Port | IP Address | Subnet Mask |
HMC1 | 169.254.2.147 | 255.255.255.0 |
HMC2 | 169.254.3.147 | 255.255.255.0 |
Service Processor B (if installed): | ||
Port | IP Address | Subnet Mask |
HMC1 | 169.254.2.146 | 255.255.255.0 |
HMC2 | 169.254.3.146 | 255.255.255.0 |
Note: The PC would have to be temporarily reconfigured so that its IP address falls in the range of the address on the HMC.
Example
PC connecting to a Power5 system's FSP at port HMC1 would want an IP address such as 192.168.2.100, subnet mask 255.255.255.0:
PC=192.168.2.100/255.255.255.0 --- PC's Ethernet port ---- standard Ethernet cable --- HMC1 port -- 192.168.2.147/255.255.255.0
PC connecting to a Power6 system's FSP at port HMC2 on Service Processor B would want an IP address such as 169.254.3.100, subnet mask 255.255.255.0:
PC=169.254.3.100/255.255.255.0 --- PC's Ethernet port ---- standard Ethernet cable --- HMC2 port(FSP_B) -- 169.254.3.146/255.255.255.0
