Fatal Error: Starting SSL failed: certificate unknown

Troubleshooting

Problem

Fatal Error: Starting SSL failed: certificate unknown

Symptom

Fatal Error: Starting SSL failed: certificate unknown

Cause

There are 3 known chances for this error:

(1) You are using a chained certificate -- i.e., a certificate that is signed by another certificate that is signed by yet another certificate, and so on.
One of the chained certificates is missing from the trusted root.

(2) You are missing a root certificate on your trusted roots file.

(3) Firewall issues -- specifically, we know of Checkpoint firewall issues.

Resolving The Problem

(1,2) Add the necessary certificates to your trusted roots file. Specifically, if you are using self-signed certificates, the "PUBLIC" part of your keycert file has to be added to your trusted roots file.

(3) Contact your firewall support.
