FAQ - What is the Windows service "IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation"?

Troubleshooting

Problem

Customer has noticed that there is a Windows service called 'IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation'. What is this service?

Symptom

Controller 10.2 (or later) Windows services:

Controller 10.1.1 Windows services:

Cause

From Controller 10.2.0 onwards, the vast majority of the Controller engine's "COM+ components" have been moved to "native .NET".

  • However, the two 'consolidation' components remain in COM+
  • These two components reside inside a COM+ application which (from Controller 10.2.0 onwards) has been renamed "IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation"
  • As part of changes designed to improve the ease of installation and maintenance of Controller, from version 10.2 this COM+ application has been made to run as a Windows service.

Environment

Controller 10.2 onwards.

Resolving The Problem

The main purpose of the new IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation service is to make the installation of the Controller application server easier.

  • Specifically, it allows the COM+ components to run under the 'Local System' account, which therefore removes the need to create/use a dedicated 'COM+ user' Windows user account.

More Information:
The Windows service "IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation" runs the consolidation engine components (which are located inside a COM+ application).

FAQ (Frequently asked questions):

Question 1 - Why was this service created?

Answer: Purely to make the installation of the Controller application server slightly easier.

Question 2 - How does this affect the end users?

Answer: There is no change whatsoever in the end user's experience.

Question 3 - Do I need to manually stop or start it at any time?

Answer: No - there is not need to ever manually start or stop it. The Controller application server will automatically start it whenever it needs it.

Question 4 - Is there anything that I can do to tweak/optimise this service?

Answer: No - please do not make any changes to this service.

With older versions of Controller, there were techniques to improve/tweak the COM+ consolidation components. However, these tweaks/techniques are not applicable to Controller 10.2 onwards.

This is a deliberate change by IBM. We have changed the COM+ component subsystem (including creating this new Windows service) deliberately to avoid the need for customers to have to tweak/change the consolidation engine settings.

There is no need for customers to perform any action in relation to the new 'IBM Cognos Controller Consolidation' Windows service.
