False VRM failure - Netfinity 7100, 7600

Symptom
All models of the Netfinity 7100 or 7600 server may experience false voltage regulator module (VRM) failures with the IBM Netfinity 7100 and 7600 Advanced System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette version 1.21 (or lower).
 
When the error occurs:

• the VRM diagnostic LED will be illuminated.
• a VRM failure message will appear in the system error log.
• the system will shutdown and will be held in reset until a power cycle is initiated.

Affected configurations
The system is any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:

• a Netfinity 7600 server, type 8665, any model
• a Netfinity 7100 server, type 8666, any model

The firmware levels affected are:

• 1.21 or lower

The 1.21 or lower firmware for the IBM Netfinity 7100 and 7600 Advanced System Management Processor is affected.
 
The system has the symptom described above.  

Solution
Download and apply IBM Server 8665 and 8666 - Advanced System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette, version 1.22 or higher.

Additional information
Any Netfinity 7100 and 7600 with the Advanced System Management Processor Firmware Update Diskette version 1.21 (or lower) firmware should be upgraded to 1.22 (or higher).
 
NOTE: This update should be made regardless of whether this failure has occurred.
