IBM Support

Explanation of start command with SUB=MSTR

Question & Answer

Question

I issue a START RACF,SUB=MSTR and it appears that JES2 get involved. SDSF JOB DATA SET DISPLAY - JOB RACF (STC69881) LINE 1-1 (1) NP DDNAME StepName ProcStep DsID Owner C Dest Rec-Cnt Page JESMSGLG RACF 2 SRACFID X 0 I can't find another SUB=MSTR address space that does this. I thought that JES2 didn't get involved with started tasks that were started with SUB=MSTR. Can you explain this ?

Answer

It is not JES2 that gets involved with tasks that are started with the SUB=MSTR parameter but the other way around.

Some tasks that are started/run under the MASTER subsystem may require the use of JES2 services.
For instance the ability to make use of JES2 spool.
In the cases, where they require JES2 services, they will interface with JES2 and get a JES2 job number to use.
You will find that the MASTER subsystem itself has a JES2 job number in order to write the SYSLOG to spool.
