Question & Answer
Question
Can IBM Spectrum Protect for Mail be used to restore Exchange 2003 mailboxes after the user has been moved to an Exchange 2010 server?
Cause
There are Mailbox Restore limitations between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010.
Answer
The Exchange database structure changed significantly in the Exchange 2010 server. Thus there is no compatibility to restore an older backup to an Exchange 2010 Server.
Additionally, after you move mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, you will no longer be able to perform mailbox restore operations even if you use an Exchange 2003 Server. This restriction exists because the migration to Exchange 2010 changes the mailbox information that is stored in the Active Directory.
A possible work around would be to restore the appropriate Exchange 2003 databases into the
Recovery Storage Group of an Exchange 2003 server. Then, use ExMerge to copy the messages to the desired location. If errors are seen when attempting the ExMerge, it may be necessary to use ADSIEDIT (Active Directory GUI editor) to change the Active Directory for information relating to the old 2003 Exchange Server mailbox. It is advised to contact Microsoft support for assistance.
