RETAIN tip H173029
Symptom
|
---|
Excessive amount of single-bit memory errors, or multiple-bit memory errors.
For machine types 8658 and 8656
The errors are recorded in the system error log, the front panel error warning LED is on, and the LED indicator next to the failing memory DIMM is on.
For machine type 8657
The errors are recorded in the POST error log.
Affected configurations
|
---|
The system may be any of the following IBM eServer xSeries servers:
- An xSeries 340, type 8656, any model
- An xSeries 230, type 8658, any model
The system may be any of the following IBM Netfinity servers:
- A Netfinity 5100 server, type 8658, any model
- A Netfinity 4500R server, type 8656, any model
- A Netfinity 3500-M20 server, type 8657, any model
The system is configured with one or more of the 256MB DIMMs in any slots.
The 256MB DIMM has a header code equal to J1AVM.
Note: The header code is part of the 22 character barcode, from character 12 through 16, such as the following: 11S38L3241ZJ1AVM02906M
The 256MB DIMM has a small "SIT" label.
The system has the symptom described above.
Workaround
|
---|
Replace the defective memory DIMM with replacement part number (FRU) 33L3126.
Additional information
|
---|
A small number of 256MB memory DIMMs from Hyundai may have been inadvertently installed in the Netfinity 5100, 4500R, 3500-M20 or the xSeries 230 and 340 servers.
Due to marginal design of this particular DIMM, systems may experience an excessive amount of single-bit memory errors, or multiple-bit memory errors.
For the 5100/230 and 4500R/340, the errors are recorded in the system error log, the front panel error warning LED is on, and the LED indicator next to the failing memory DIMM is on.
The failing memory module is a 256MB DIMM with header code J1AVM.
Note: Memory DIMMs with other header codes are not affected by this tip.
