The following example shows how Sterling TMS uses the MileageLookup Type:

1. Create a contract with your carrier:
   • Setthe Rating Method for the lanes to FullRoute Distance. Sterling TMS will calculatethe rate based on the total route from the origin to the destination.
   • Set the Mileage Lookup Type to City. Sterling TMS will use thecity data from your mileage source to calculate the shipment distance.
2. Submit the following shipment:
   • The origin isa factory in Dallas TX 75252.
   • The destination is a warehousein New York City NY 10450.
3. The carrier acceptsthe load and Sterling TMS usesthe contractfrom Step 1 to rate the shipment.
4. Based on the mileage source Sterling TMS returns 1573miles as the distance between Dallas and New York City. If you hadset the Mileage Lookup Type to PostalCode Sterling TMS wouldhave returned 1578 miles as the distance between postal codes 75252and 10450.

PC Miler and MileMaker will only calculatethe distance betweentwo cities or the distance between two postal codes. The mileage sourcecannot calculate the mileage between a city and a postal code.

Forexample:

1. You select that you want to calculate mileageusing cities.
2. You enter a shipment that has an origin cityof Wichita KS. 67214and a destination city of StCloud MN 56301.
3. Your mileagesource does not recognize the city StCloud MN. Themileage source does not calculate the distance between:
   • Thevalid origin of Wichita KS.
   • The postal code of 56301 forthe destination (because StCloudwas not a valid city).
4. Instead the mileage sourceuses the distance between postal codes67214 and 56301.
