The following example shows the process of setting up andusing carrier types.

1. You define an Illinois-to-Ohio lane in your contracts with thesecarriers:

   Carrier C	Backup	$2.10 per mile
   Carrier D	Primary	$1.90 per mile
   Carrier E	Secondary	$1.85 per mile

2. You define a Route Guide rule for the Illinois-to-Ohio lane:
   • You specify sequential tendering.
   • You sort by rate.
   • You want to tender to all carriers: primary secondary and backup.
3. On the Execution Options page you set the CarrierType Display to Primary and Secondary.
4. In Execution you create and tender a shipment from Chicago toCleveland. Sterling TMS tendersthe shipment sequentially to the carriers in this order:

This example illustrates the following rules about using carriertypes:

• Sterling TMS doesnot tender the shipment to Carrier C which was defined as a backupcarrier in this lane. You defined your Shipment Options to only useprimary and secondary carriers.
• Sterling TMS sortscarriers within their carrier type. The primary carriers are listedfirst and then the secondary carriers.
• Sterling TMS tendersto the primary carriers first and then the secondary carriers. Thesystem tenders to Carrier D first ($1.90 per mile) even though CarrierE has a lower rate ($1.85 per mile).
