Troubleshooting
Problem
This technote identifies how to resolve the error, "Data Provider or Other service returned an E_FAIL status", which can occur when creating a view anywhere in a specific IBM® Rational® RequisitePro® Microsoft® Access based project.
Resolving The Problem
Compact and repair the Access database usually resolves the issue.
REPAIRING AND COMPACTING USING MICROSOFT ACCESS:
- Make sure that all users have closed the project.
- Launch Microsoft Access.
- Cancel out of the initial dialog box, which asks whether you want to open or create a database. Access will start.
- Go to Tools > Database Utilities > Compact and Repair Database. In the Compact Database From window, browse to the project MDB file, then click on Compact.
- In the Compact Database Into window, select the same database. Click Save.
Note: The existing database can be used as a backup, if instead of using the original MDB file name and overwriting the original database, a new name is used in the Compact Database Into window (such as db1.mdb). Before opening the project in RequisitePro, and after completing the repair and compact process, the old database will need to be renamed to a different name (such as project.bak) and the newly compacted database will need to be renamed to the name of the original database (such as projectname.mdb). - A warning will appear asking if the database should be overwritten (see Note, above). Click Yes.
- When it completes, it will go back to the blank Microsoft Access screen.
The database has been compacted and repaired successfully.
