Error: 'The "variant" data type is not supported.' when starting the UCD server

Troubleshooting


Problem

When using UCD 7.1.1.x or 7.1.2.x with SQL Server databases, the following error occurs when starting the UCD server:

2021-02-11 16:24:15,464 EST ERROR main com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.internals.TDS.Reader - ConnectionID:1 ClientConnectionId: ea2cfe6f-fd97-4bb0-b066-6fce1ea7b123 got unexpected value in TDS response at offset:310
2021-02-11 16:24:15,466 EST ERROR main org.hibernate.engine.jdbc.env.internal.JdbcEnvironmentImpl - Could not fetch the SequenceInformation from the database
com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The "variant" data type is not supported.
at com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException.makeFromDriverError(SQLServerException.java:191)

Symptom

After installing UCD 7.1.1.x/7.1.2.x  or upgrading to UCD 7.1.1.x/7.1.2.x, the UCD server might not start if you are using SQL Server database.
